Loughmoney

Loughmoney is a freshwater lake in the heart of the Lecale area. Nestled among the hills the lake sits at the bottom of Slieve-na-griddle which is named after a large dolmen which stood on its summit. The lake is also the source for the River Slaney which flows to the landing spot of Saint Patrick on Strangford Lough.

There are fishing stands along the edge of the lake. Stocked with rainbow trout, pike and perch the season runs from February to December. The lake was once acquired as a reservior for Downpatrick, the remains of the pumping station are still there to be seen.

The area is surrounded by a network of laneways. Along the arterial routes there are numerous neolithic monuments to be seen including ring marked stones, dolmens, and standing stones. As the area is popular with anglers take care around fishing stands.
