Often described as one of the jewels in The National Trust’s crown, The Argory, a handsome Irish gentry house, is surrounded by its 130-hectare (320-acre) wooded riverside estate.
Outside there are sweeping vistas, superb spring bulbs and fascinating courtyard displays. The wheel chair friendly, 2 mile Lime Tree Walk takes you along the avenue of pollarded lime trees under-planted by snowdrops and spring flowers. This walk passes The Argory Oak Plantation, returning to the house by the main drive.
A second-hand bookshop, adventure playground and Lady Ada's award-winning tea-room provide retreats for children and adults alike. Not forgetting the house which remains unchanged since 1900’s.
Keep an eye out for the Tree Sparrow - a scarce farmland bird (not the same as the well-known house sparrow) usually found nesting in ruined or disused buildings close to water. It feeds on small invertebrates and seeds from the riverbank grasses.
