The Giant’s Causeway and National Trust NI have asked people to stop inserting coins into the fractures in the rocks at the World Heritage Site.
Geologists from the British Geological Survey have recently examined the site and found that in addition to the unsightly impact on the rocks, the mixing of chemistry between both, in addition to the seawater, is causing the coins to expand which damages the rocks further.
The practise of inserting coins began locally, however tourists coming to the site assume it to be something to replicate and do so, adding to the problem.
The National Trust NI have now set in place a plan to remove the coins that they are safely able to without damaging the rocks, and mitigating the damage around those they can’t.
