Sorry, we don’t like to start a blog in a threatening tone. But think of it more as a friendly warning! You don’t want to get eaten by the Granite Goblin, do you?
If you spend any time on Instagram or YouTube you may already know Stephen J Reid – part–musician, part–comedian, part–outdoor-enthusiast whose sketches about life in Northern Ireland have racked up millions of views. We asked Stephen to put his own spin on the Right Side of Outside code and, true to form, he delivered a 40-second news-flash like nothing you’ve seen before.
Stephen adopts the mantle of a reporter warning outdoor enthusiasts of the fearsome ‘Granite Goblin’, who is stalking incosiderate hikers that drop their rubbish as they go.
One claim we see over and over again is that “It’s okay to drop banana skins / apple cores / other fruit because they’re biodegradable.” The Granite Goblin perhaps understands that banana skins can take up to two years to decompose, and that it impacts the local ecosystem negatively.
The Right Side of Outside messaging is covered in full at the end of the video, as Stephen reminds hikers and campers to ensure they prepare properly and bring the right equipment; to bring all your rubbish and dog poo home; to have a back up plan if a site is too busy and to respect wildlife and livestock.
Please share this video with anyone who you think will appreciate it. We get the feeling this won’t be the last time you’ll see the Granite Goblin…
