With spring around the corner, lambing season is here. Protect livestock AND your dog – keep them on a lead
It may be hard to believe (particularly given the cold at the moment) but spring is just around the corner. With lambing season therefore underway, it’s vital to remember that sheep and their lambs can be easily stressed—especially if dogs approach them. Even the presence of a dog on a lead can unsettle livestock.
When dogs run free, the risks multiply, sometimes leading to chased or injured animals. In extreme circumstances, farmers may feel compelled to defend their flock, potentially putting dogs themselves at risk.
If you’re planning to bring your four-legged friend along on an outing, consider heading to one of the many forests, parks, or coastal spots where livestock are less likely to be present.
And wherever you go, please keep your dog on a lead—doing so not only avoids upsetting sheep, wildlife, and other visitors, but ensures you’re fulfilling your responsibilities as a dog owner during this sensitive lambing season.
