Test the Water – Become a Citizen Scientist!

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) Minister, Andrew Muir is encouraging people in Northern Ireland to test the water at local water sources in the ‘Great UK Water Blitz’.

The event takes place between Fri 25th and Mon 28th April 2025 and allows participants to take simple water tests at their local water sources. Afterwards, you upload your results to a central database which helps form a snapshot of the water quality across the UK.

These simple actions can play a huge part in contributing to better understanding and action to protect our water environment. 500 water test kits will be distributed across Northern Ireland.

Dr. Sasha Woods, Director of Science and Policy at Earthwatch Europe emphasised how important schmes like this are. “Our canals, lakes and streams are threatened by pollution from multiple sources. Urgent action is needed to safeguard the future of our precious freshwater ecosystems.”
